Virginia Tech will play Cincinnati in 2012 at FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins, Tech announced yesterday.
The game was originally scheduled to be this season’s opener, in Cincinnati. But the Hokies moved it to 2012 to accommodate a game against Alabama in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, which they lost 34-24. Now, the location is moving, too, though the Bearcats will technically be the home team.
Tech and Cincinnati played at Lane Stadium in 2006, when the Hokies won 29-13, and in last season’s Orange Bowl, which the Hokies won 20-7. The 2012 game will finish the home-and-home series that began in 2006.
It also is scheduled to be the Hokies’ third trip to FedEx Field. They lost to Southern California, the eventual unbeaten national champion, to open the 2004 season and are scheduled to play Boise State next season.
Information on tickets sales and kickoff date and time for Tech-Cincinnati in 2012 will be released at a later date.
Right now, three years out, the game looks intriguing. The Bearcats are 10-0 and ranked fifth in the latest Bowl Championship Series standings. They have won 16 of their past 17 games. Their only loss: last season’s Orange Bowl.
