Cavaliers hoping change is good for offense

Jul 25, 2010

Chief among the many questions faced by the University of Virginia football team for the 2010 season is, “What’s up with the offense?”

The Cavaliers finished the 2009 season ranked 118th out of 120 teams in total offense.

This year, they have a new head coach, Mike London, and a new offensive coordinator, Bill Lazor.

They have a definite about the starting quarterback. It is Mark Verica. The Cavaliers began the 2009 season in a spread offense, then went back to a more basic attack. This year, they are in a pro style offense. Lazor came to the staff after serving as a quarterbacks coach for the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks.

“Our offense has something to prove,” Verica said today at ACC media days in Greensboro, N.C. “Our defense has been very good. Our offense, not so much.”

Last year, three players began the preseason competing for the starting job.

“The team didn’t know who would be the quarterback and we [the quarterbacks] didn’t know who would start,” Verica said. “This year, I am the starting quarterback. I am the captain. I consider this my offense. It makes a big difference. You know you have the support of your teammates and coaches.

“You’re not looking over your shoulder. That’s not the best environment. That’s not really conducive to guys playing their best. It will be good to have that out of my mind. I can focus on playing to the best of my ability.”
