Top-ranked James Madison (3-0, 5-1) visits No. 5 Richmond (2-1, 4-2) on Saturday for what promises to be an interesting matchup between two of the best Football Championship Subdivision teams in the country. But which team does it mean the most to? UR probably, since the Spiders already have one loss in league play. Another one would just about eliminate UR from CAA championship contention. A victory by JMU, meanwhile, would put the Dukes in prime position for the title. JMU still has to go to Villanova, which would likely be its biggest test the rest of the way, although Delaware could give the Dukes some trouble in Harrisonburg. The road team has won the last four games in this series, which favors the Dukes, but expect the Spiders to spin a winning web.
Another significant game in the conference this week features No, 13 Massachusetts (1-1, 3-2) at Northeastern (1-0, 2-3). Coming off a hard-fought victory over Delaware, UMass must win in order to keep its CAA title hopes alive. The Huskies look better than they did a year ago and the Minutemen have struggled on the road, going 1-2. Another key matchup is No. 24 Delaware (0-1, 2-3) entertaining Maine (0-2, 2-3). The Blue Hens can’t afford to start 0-2 in the league if they want to stay in the running for the South Division crown. Delaware managed only 167 yards of offense in its 17-7 loss at UMass but should get considerable more than that vs. Maine.
Fourth-ranked New Hampshire (1-0, 4-0), the only unbeaten team in the CAA, returns from a bye week and should be able to handle William and Mary (0-1, 2-2) at home. The last time (2005) these teams met, however, the Tribe knocked off then No. 1 UNH in Williamsburg 42-10, so you can bet coach Sean McDonnell will remind his troops of that fact. The Wildcats have a shot at winning their first eight before meeting Villanova (road) and UMass (home) next month.
