Maybe it’s no surprise that New Hampshire is 4-0 and the lone unbeaten club in the CAA, considering who the Wildcats have played. The combined record of the four teams UNH has beaten is 2-13. One of the victories was over Army, a member of the Football Bowl Subdivision level, but the Black Knights are 0-4, The Wildcats are off this weekend then face William and Mary next Saturday at home. Sophomore QB R.J. Toman has capably filled the shoes of All-American Ricky Santos, passing for 910 yards and 10 TDs, while junior running back Chad Kackert is averaging 112 yards a game rushing, second in the league.
Speaking of W&M, if the Tribe wants to end its string of three losing seasons, Saturday’s home game against Villanova is a game they most likely have to win. A victory would make W&M 3-1 and put them in position for a possible three-game sweep of weak sisters Rhode Island, Towson and Northeastern later in the season that would assure a winning record. Two of those games are in Williamsburg, increasing the Tribe’s chances of winning. QB Jake Phillips, who aggravated a foot injury against Norfolk State on Sept. 20, is off crutches and practiced on a limited basis Wednesday. His status is still questionable.
The key game in the conference this week matches Delaware at Massachusetts. UMass is already 0-1 in the CAA, having dropped a 52-38 decision to James Madison. Another loss would make it difficult for the preseason favorite Minutemen to finish as the overall conference champion. UMass still has to play Richmond and New Hampshire. It would also be the Minutemen’s third overall loss with half the season left. This is the first league game for the Blue Hens, who are 2-2 and still have to play at JMU and Richmond. The loser of this game could have trouble making the FCS playoffs.
