CHARLOTTESVILLE—Practice begins a week from today for Dave Leitao’s team, but the coming season isn’t the only thing on the Virginia coach’s mind these days.
Many of the prospects who figure prominently in Leitao’s recruiting wish lists for 2010-11 and 2011-12 will be in the Charlottesville the next two weekends.
Expected at U.Va. this weekend are 11th-grader C.J. Fair, a 6-7 forward from Baltimore, and 10th-grader Trevor Cooney, a 6-3 shooting guard from Delaware.
Visitors scheduled to be in town next weekend include 10th-grader John Manning, a 6-11 center from Northern Virginia whose parents are U.Va. graduates; 11th-grader Travis McKie, a 6-6 forward who plays for Richmond’s John Marshall High; and 12th-grader Tristan Spurlock, a 6-7 forward from Woodbridge who has committed to the Cavaliers for 2009-10.
The early signing period is next month. Spurlock and Jontel Evans, a point guard from Hampton’s Bethel High, are U.Va.’s commitments for 2009-10, but Leitao may add a third recruit in that class.
Coming out of the summer, Virginia’s targets in the Class of 2010 included Josh Hairston, a 6-8 forward from Courtland High near Fredericksburg. Hairston committed to Duke last month, but yesterday’s announcement that 12th-grader Ryan Kelly will play for Mike Krzyzewski may not go over well with Hairston’s family.
Kelly is a heralded 6-10 forward from Raleigh, N.C., and his arrival at Duke will add to the logjam at Hairston’s position in Coach K’s program.
