Anything from the scrimmage? EVERYTHING from the scrimmage.
Darryl Slater
Aug 18, 2007

I probably could just write all night, filling this space with nuggets from today’s scrimmage, but we’ll just stick with the most pertinent stuff. And away we go ...

- Jud Dunlevy had enough distance on all his field goals, even though he missed all four. Frank Beamer said Dunlevy’s leg is as strong as Shayne Graham’s or Brandon Pace’s, and it’s hard to disagree after watching Dunlevy’s two attempts yesterday from 52 yards, though one went wide left, the other wide right. Beamer said Dunlevy’s worst kick was his 29-yard miss, which sailed wide right.

- Running back Branden Ore carried just twice for 4 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Lewis worked a lot with the first team. But don’t read too much into that, Beamer said. Ore ... is still ... his number one ... guy.

- The Hokies are off Sunday and Monday, when classes start. They begin preparing for East Carolina on Tuesday.

- Beamer wants to use Monday to hash out his plan for the offensive line. His thoughts on the line’s play today: “I thought there was a couple breakdowns. I think they’re fighting. They’re trying hard. I think what we’ve got to do is settle down on who we’re working with.” He said he wants a solid list of five first-string guys and five second-stringers. He said it’s hard to give a backup lineman proper reps when two players are working at the second-string spot.

- The first-string line yesterday was, from left to right: Duane Brown, Matt Welsh (Brandon Holland replaced him when he bruised his leg; Welsh will be fine), Ryan Shuman, Sergio Render and Nick Marshman. The second string was (at least in the few times I noted the personnel): Aaron Brown, Holland, Beau Warren, Jaymes Brooks (true freshman) and Richard Graham.

- In other line-related news, true freshman left guard Blake DeChristopher (Clover Hill High) said at Friday’s car wash that his last name is properly spelled with a capital C. He said Tech’s sports information department accidentally noted that he wants his name spelled with a lower-case C, which is why it appeared as such in a recent story. But we’re going back to the capital C for good now.

- Backup punter Brian Saunders almost snuck one inside the 2-yard line, but the ball bounced just inside the pylon and out the side of the end zone. Saunders punted twice, and starter Brent Bowden—who drives a sick yellow Corvette—punted thrice.

- Predictably, true freshman quarterback Tyrod Taylor got a huge pop from the crowd when he worked with the third-team offense. He looked sharp, completing 3 of 6 passes for 21 yards in three series.

- Tech’s defense needed to replace three starters from last year—at whip linebacker, rover and defensive end. Two of those spots, whip and defensive end, will be occupied by The Brothers Martin—Cam and Orion. Cam, a sophomore whip, had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble yesterday. Orion, a junior end, had four tackles, three for a loss, and a sack. Check the print edition later this week for a story on the Martins.

- The Times-Dispatch’s Three Stars Of The Scrimmage (in no particular order): WR Eddie Royal (88-yard punt return for TD); LB Cam Martin (five tackles, two for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble); QB Sean Glennon (6 of 10 for 117 yards and a TD, fairly steady all around).

- Two more items that play-by-play man Bill Roth requested I pass along in this space (and I agreed, because Roth is a good guy, not to mention a fellow Syracuse University alum): Virginia Tech Sports Today, Tech’s weekly TV magazine show, debuts today. It airs at 12:30 p.m. on WRIC. The Hokie Hotline radio show debuts Monday. The show airs on 910 AM in Richmond, from 7-9 p.m. every Monday. It is broadcast from Awful Arthur’s, a new seafood restaurant in Kent Square in downtown Blacksburg. They shuck a mean oyster there.
