A whole lotta Love

Greetings from San Antonio. It’s the eve of the Final Four, and the teams have convened in the Alamodome for hour-long practice sessions heavy on entertainment value for assembled spectators anxious for a (free) glimpse of the players. By miles, the loudest cheer came when UCLA freshman center Kevin Love drained a chest-pass shot from the opposite end line—94 feet from the basket. OK, he’d missed the shot a dozen or more times before sinking it, but still. Following the make, Love bowed to his teammates and the audience, a broad grin on his face. Great player. Great presence. During a media session, someone asked him about the Beach Boys (his uncle, Mike Love, is one of their lead singers) and how the group resonates with his teammates. “I don’t think [Serbian forward] Nikola Dragovic or the Cameroonians [forwards Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Alfred Aboya] even know who the Beach Boys are,“ Love said.
