A quick update on the quarterbacks and Wild Turkey leftovers
Darryl Slater
Nov 10, 2008

Bryan Stinespring is a busy man—far busier than I. So I wonder whether he had to consider the double meaning of his new formation, the Wild Turkey. It involves tight end Greg Boone lining up at quarterback, and Stinespring debuted it in last Thursday’s win over Maryland.

I’ll have a story on the Wild Turkey (formation, not booze) in tomorrow’s print edition. The challenge for Stinespring is to make the formation and its plays deceiving enough to trick opponents but not so complication as to confuse his own players. Stinespring said one of coach Frank Beamer’s questions about the formation leading up to the Maryland game was whether it would take away from the “nuts and bolts” of the offense. Stinespring wants to continue to use the Wild Turkey, but he’s being careful about it becoming a “scheme within a scheme.“ In other words, he doesn’t want to overload his players with information.

Now a quick update on the quarterback situation from position coach Mike O’Cain ...

On whether there is a chance Tyrod Taylor could play Thursday at Miami—“I think there’s a chance, yeah. Because you’re still several days away. He’s better. It’s just limited work. Hopefully every day he gets a little bit better.“

On Sean Glennon—“He’s not full speed by any stretch of the imagination, but he’s back to being able to practice. He wasn’t a full-speed player Saturday. He could do all the drops and those things, but when you had to pull the ball down and run, he was not full speed.

O’Cain acknowledged that Taylor probably could have played Thursday, “but playing and playing well are two different things. Obviously with Tyrod, his quickness is part of his weapons, his arsenal. If he doesn’t have that, then he’s not where he needs to be.“

Thanks for the visit to miami Mr. Slater.

High ankle sprains are truly annoying.  We had a center fielder out a whole YEAR from it.

However, I hope Taylor plays.  I do not want any excuses thrown our way if Miami wins.

To even do better than last year’s 44-14 would make me happy though.  We performed 55 points better versus Virginia, (from 0-48 to 24-17), so 31 points better is not as big a stretch as it might seem.
