Wide receiver Malcolm Kelly continues to work out with the team in the hopes that he will be available at some point this season. That game could be Sunday. If not, it will probably be soon. Coach Jim Zorn said he would probably sit one more out while he catches up on the team’s offense in practice.
The team has stuck with Kelly this long for one simple reason—there is not a better free agent available. If not, they would have signed that player and but Kelly on injured reserve to end his season.
We knew this would be an issue going into the season, and some teams passed on him because of that. But the key here—and Zorn understands this—is to not rush him back, because even if he doesn’t play this season he can be a contributor for many years to come. A redshirt season, if you will.
Without him, the receiving corps this weekend will rely on Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El and tight end Chris Cooley, who has been proficient as a receiver this season.

Happy Friday morning, or afternoon to those of you reading this late after an exciting night of NFL football. For the 12 of you who have the NFL Network, it was a big night for Brett Favre and the Jets, who won in overtime, but the Patriots showed me that they’ll still be in the hunt when January rolls around.
On to more Redskins-related things:
Those of you who subscribe to Sports Illustrated can look forward to this profile of Clinton Portis in this week’s issue.
An the Washington Times caught up with LaVar Arrington, who’s still in Washington post-football. On page three of the article, he has some choice words for local legend Joe Gibbs, who he said came back to make money for his NASCAR team. Aside from that, he is still a Redskins fan and now owns a sports bar in Maryland.

Well, another day of practice and another day without Clinton Portis. At this point, the safe money is on Ladell Betts starting at running back Sunday night for the Redskins against the Cowboys. Even coach Jim Zorn told reporters that the reasons for optimism are fading.
Betts is feeling healthy this week and while there won’t be an official determination until later in the week, it’s looking promising for him to get at least a few carries.
