Some offbeat links to take you through this Tuesday afternoon.

—Capitals hockey star Alex Ovechkin was on Comcast’s Redskins pregame show before attending his third Redskins game on Sunday. The Russian’s thoughts on America’s game?

“I try to realize what’s going on and what’s the rules. But you know, its pretty interesting. I like the stadium atmosphere, lots of people.“

—Which Redskins player summarized Sunday’s victory with a limerick? That was, of course, tight end Chris Cooley.

—And finally, Jason Campbell will hang out with an area high school football team as part of a contest. Details are here. No promises that he’ll teach the winner how to go seven weeks without an interception.

No practice scheduled today at Redskins Park. I’ll have updates as they come in.

Because we know you just can’t get enough of everybody’s favorite special teams position.

The Redskins have reportedly settled with punter Durant Brooks. That means that he will not be placed on the injured reserve list and is now a free agent in the NFL. Brooks was a talented college kicker who, if he spends the remainder of the year working out, should be able to get a look with a team next fall.

Meanwhile new punter Ryan Plackemeier drew mixed reviews for his opening performance. Coach Jim Zorn gushed about how great he was, while the fans got a little restless after a short third-quarter kick. Plackemeier excelled at pinning the Browns inside the 20, but struggled a little on longer kicks. His first punt should have been downed on the one-yard line but the Redskins player waiting for it lost the ball on the bounce—can’t hold that against Plack’.

More on various injuries later today including a look at the team’s new backfield of Portis/Cartwright/Alexander.

Notes from today’s chat with coach:

—Clinton Portis is sore, but will be fine. “We treated several things,“ Zorn said. “Foot, hip, shin, ankle. He’s carrying a big load, so he may need a little bit of a rest (this week in practice) – I’m willing to give it to him for sure.“

—Jason Campbell played through some groin pain, and Zorn said he noticed it. “He was noticeably inaccurate on several throws that I felt that he should have hit,“ the coach said. “But the thing that was great was that he continually pushed, made some big plays and kept us in the ballgame.“

—Shawn Springs will remain questionable this week with a calf injury, and Fred Smoot has a groin injury that “may need to be nursed,“ but the rest of the secondary should be fine this week.

—Zorn had a special hat tip for Casey Rabach. “He went to heroics really to block that physical of a player (Shaun Rogers). He was tough and he was explosive. I tip my hat to what Casey did. Because of their defensive configuration, Casey had to block him mano y mano, and it was hard.“

—If you thought the Rams were a trap game, get ready for the Lions: “At 0-6 and playing well in all of their games, this is going to be the most dangerous team in the National Football League,“ Zorn said. “It’s the score that’s made the difference for them, not their plans.“

Coming into the three-game series against the Rams, Browns and Lions, I said that the team would stumble once and emerge at 6-2. If they can pull that off by beating the winless Lions, this team will be well-positioned in the NFC East.

But first let’s rewind to a couple things from yesterday’s game while we await coach Jim Zorn’s 12:25 p.m. press conference, which we’ll have for you here.

—Santana Moss is back in the offensive rhythm. He’s going to be hit or miss the way defenders key on him, but Jason Campbell really needs to make an effort to try to get the ball to him even in that coverage, as he did yesterday. When Moss is a threat, everybody benefits. Also worth noting: he now has 6,015 career receiving yards.

—Rock Cartwright came in to relieve Clinton Portis on plays, while Shaun Alexander did the relief for entire drives. Neither were overwhelmingly great but Cartwright was definitely the better of the two, which bodes well for his future touches.

—New punter Ryan Plackemeier certainly did fine in his first appearance with the team, and almost came away with an inside-the-five result on his first punt, but the Redskins were unable to corral the ball as it bounced their way. The only special teams snafu was on a field goal that would have given the team a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, which appeared to be a high snap.

—Today’s game story revolves around Carlos Rogers, who is quietly putting together a Pro Bowl year at the position. He draws the best assignments and then shuts those receivers down, as he did to Braylon Edwards yesterday.

Jason Campbell felt some tightness in his groin before the game, but played through it. That was the only major injury, and I’m sure we’ll get an update on it when Zorn takes the podium at 12:25.
