Along with the daily stories, we often add other stats and graphical elements in the newspaper version that don’t make it to this website (consider it an incentive to fork over your 75 cents).

Here was today’s, which is a companion to this story about the beating Jason Campbell is taking because of offensive line failures.

————

Jason Campbell could become the first quarterback since Brad Johnson in 1999 to start all 16 regular-season games. That is, if Campbell’s offensive line can protect him in the season’s final six games.

A look at previous Redskins seasons and the number of games each quarterback started:

2007 Jason Campbell 13, Todd Collins 3
2006 Mark Brunell 9, Campbell 7
2005 Brunell 15, Patrick Ramsey 1
2004 Ramsey 7, Brunell 9
2003 Ramsey 11, Tim Hasselbeck 5
2002 Shane Matthews 7, Ramsey 5, Danny Wuerffel 4
2001 Tony Banks 14, Jeff George 2
2000 Brad Johnson 11, George 5
1999 Brad Johnson 16
1998 Trent Green 14, Gus Frerotte 2
1997 Frerotte 13, Jeff Hostettler 3
1996 Frerotte 16

One of the team’s three second-round picks, he hasn’t seen a lot of time this year. Coach Jim Zorn was asked why yesterday:

“It makes no sense for me to put a guy out there who can run real fast but not go in the right direction, or in some cases not even go out, not because he forgot, but because it didn’t register. .. If it happens twice, yeah. If it happens at all, that’s hard to trust.“

Apparently Davis has been having some mental lapses in practice and that is diminishing Zorn’s confidence to use him in game situations. This only contributes to the receiving problem we’ve seen recently, with Malcolm Kelly injured and Devin Thomas struggling to gain traction as an NFL receiver. You draft for long-term potential, but Redskins fans would sure love to see some short-term results from those guys right now.

Of course the big storyline this week (aside from, you know, football games) is that coach Jim Zorn is returning to Seattle, where his name is on the team’s Ring of Honor for his days as a left-handed quarterback and where he served as quarterbacks coach for seven years before joining the Redskins.

Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren, who is in his final year of coaching, addressed the farewell with the Seattle media yesterday. Courtesy of the Seahawks Insider, here are some of his thoughts….

“Well, I’ve had to do it before a number of times. Put Zorn on the list of guys that worked with me and then want to get back at me. You know, Jim’s a good friend, and a good coach. I’m pleased for his success. He worked very hard to develop his skills as a coach. For a former player to do what he did…He went back into college coaching and he kind of paid his dues, so to speak. You all know Jim and how he is. It’ll be fun. It’ll be fun to see him, and they have a good football team, so I hope it’s a heck of a game.”

Holmgren added that he hopes Zorn keeps his quirky personality in Washington, because to be successful, you have to be who you are, he said.

Zorn told us yesterday in Ashburn that he was going to try to downplay that portion of the week, though acknowledging it would be “an interesting game, to say the least.“

And yes, I personally promise we will beat this story into the ground before kickoff on Sunday.

Highlights from Jim Zorn’s press conference….

—Antwaan Randle El has a low-ankle sprain, and will be fine. Linebacker Marcus Washington has a high-ankle sprain and will miss at least one week, possibly more. Running backs Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts will each practice in at least a limited fashion this week and are expected to play Sunday in Seattle.

—Zorn on momentum: “If we could change a handful of things that are going on—and I’m not talking about two big fistfuls, just a handful—we could change that game. I don’t think it’s a snowball going downhill. I think we’re just treading water.  We haven’t dominated, so we’re kind of this even-steven team right now…You can’t tread water in this league for very long. You have to be swimming.“

—Zorn on protection: “The frustrating thing is to see things happening down the field but not have enough time to get the play thrown or executed. Those are the frustrating things. They magnify when the result is like today, a loss. They’re just magnified. There’s only a handful of them, but they’re glaring.“

“The individual battles aren’t getting won enough. Had we won this game, we’d still be saying we need better pass protection. Even when he was getting rid of the ball, he was still getting hit.“

—On Rock Cartwright’s challenge: “It was just an unbelievable punt. Rock saw the ball moving and immediately reacted and tried to keep it from what he thought was moving towards the endzone. His fear was that if you touch the ball, and you don’t protect it, the opponent can pick it up and run, so he was trying to secure it. In his mind that’s what he needed to do. In the excitement of the moment he got kind of fired up about it.

“Had nobody touched the ball, and we just surrounded it and stared at it, that would have been the better play.“

Also earlier chatted with Shaun Suisham, who said that he thought he had a good approach and kick on both his 41-yard FG, which was good, and his 46-yarder, which fell short. He said he thought he had the same approach both times. The 41-yarded cleared, but only barely.

One final quote/joke from Chris Cooley, and then we’ll wrap up the blog for the day. Updates as warranted, and we’ll see you tomorrow.

“The last couple years when we made the playoffs we had to win four or five to get in, with our backs against the wall. I guess we’re just trying to get into that position.“
