Well, not a good night for the Redskins. Looked like they might squeak it out for a while, but a defensive battle went to the Cowboys. To recap from today’s paper, Paul Woody had the column on a tough loss, while I focused on depth at the receiver position. A few more bonus thoughts from the night:
- It was big-game loud inside FedEx Field last night, especially in key defensive situations. Nice to see after the Pittsburgh game.
While I initially disapproved of the “Rally Rags” for being not-burgundy, large, and unoriginal, they did look cool when the entire crowd was using them. But let’s not do this every week.
- Boy, Ryan Plackemeier cannot catch a break. First he can’t get a bounce, and then last night Rock Cartwright hits the ball while in the end zone on a punt that would have come to a stop on the one-yard line if he hadn’t touched it.
Cartwright said after the game he was under the impression that once he touched the ball the play was dead, but the officials ruled otherwise.
- After the game, the Redskins help out us media types by visiting the Cowboys locker room and reporting on what key players had to say. One of those “key players” is a quote you’ll only get from the Cowboys: owner Jerry Jones. His thoughts?
“I don’t know when I have been any prouder,” he said. “This team just wouldn’t let it happen any other way. We all know what was at stake here, and I’m so proud of both sides of that ball. I have a lot of respect for the Redskins as a team, but I really know what this win meant and we can really build off of it.”
- Back on the losing side, the Redskins have got to find a way to get Jason Campbell more time. If not, expect a steady diet of blitz the remainder of the season.
And another shocking stat: the Campbell-to-Sellers TD was the team’s first in the first half since the St. Louis game on October 12. It was their first touchdown pass in the first quarter all season.
- Shaun Suisham looked off on his first kick, a 41-yarder, and then fell short on his second, from 46. We’ll get his thoughts at Redskins Park tomorrow, I’m sure.
- Tony Romo struggled to find an open receiver early – credit that to the Redskins secondary. I’d guess a decent number of his first-half passes were just check-down throws to the running back for a few yards.
- It was nice of John Madden to tape his pinky, showing solidarity with Romo. Or maybe he was making a point. It’s rarely clear with him.
- Opposing defenses are really trying to force Chris Cooley into a fumble. They know he’ll stay on his feet until he’s hit three or four times, so they’re trying to turn that into a positive with a turnover. Last night, Cooley protected the ball well after his catches.
-There was a Spanish radio station a few seats down from myself and Paul Woody in the press box. We enjoyed the loud and enthusiastic calls, at least what we could understand, which consisted of them yelling Marion Barber’s name and then “treinta, veinte, diez,” and then more yelling.
That’s going to be it for tonight. More from Redskins Park starting tomorrow morning when they open the locker room at 11 a.m. Then the coach Jim Zorn press conference at 12:25. Video and a recap right here, as always.
