Well, Shaun Alexander’s final line in Washington is 11 carries, 24 yards, no touchdowns.

He’s been released because there is no reason to keep four running backs on an active roster, and Ladell Betts is now back to full strength. It will be interesting to see if he can land somewhere else, or if he’ll have to wait it out until next year to play more football. He did get a comecoming to Seattle, where he received no carries.

Adding to the defensive line is Ryan Boschetti, who has been with the team before and provides immediate depth. He’ll jump in just in time to face the New York Giants and their league-leading trio of runners. We’ll have more from him tomorrow in Ashburn, and perhaps a farewell thought from Alexander.

By my count, this is his sixth nomination of the season. He’s up for the FedEx ground player of the week award, with voting at NFL.com.

The nominees…
  *  Chicago’s RB MATT FORTÉ led the Bears rushing for 132 yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts, averaging 6.6 yards per carry, as the Bears defeated the St. Louis Rams 27-3.
  * Washington’s RB CLINTON PORTIS tallied 143 yards on the ground over 29 carries as the Redskins defeated the Seattle Seahawks 20-17.
  * Atlanta’s RB MICHAEL TURNER rushed for 117 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries in the Falcons’ 45-28 win over the Carolina Panthers.

The Redskins did not help this cause. From the NFL…

Monday night’s 51-29 win by New Orleans over Green Bay boosted the NFL to the first 800-point weekend in its history.  A total of 837 points were scored in the league’s 16 Week 12 games, the most ever in a single NFL weekend.

The previous record was 788 points, set three times (September 5, 8-9, 2002; December 5-6, 2004; and December 29-30, 2007).

Games this season are averaging 45.0 points.  If that average holds, it would top last season’s average of 43.4 and the record average since the 16-game schedule was instituted in 1978 of 43.7 points per game in 1983.

Another off day in Ashburn, though Clinton Portis and Jim Zorn will both do their weekly radio appearances, so we’ll get updates from those guys late in the day.

The Redskins are now 7-4. If the playoffs started today (don’t panic, they won’t), that would be good enough for the six seed, which is the final playoff spot. Breathing down their neck in the division is Dallas.

Now, it’s almost a foregone conclusion at this point that the Giants (10-1) will take the division, even if the Redskins beat them Sunday (1 p.m., FedEx Field, FOX TV). But the Redskins could use a victory here to give themselves a margin for error down the stretch. If they lose to the Giants, that puts a lot of pressure on the next week’s game against the Ravens. Not a bad thing, but upsetting the Giants would go a long way towards locking up a playoff spot before the last week of the season, something this team wouldn’t mind familiarizing itself with.

A private donor has offered $50,000 to anyone who presents photographic proof of the ivory-billed woodpecker, hoping to rekindle enthusiasm for the bird reportedly spotted in Arkansas in 2004.
