Grammys forget LeRoi Moore, but fans don’t

Dave Matthews Band fans are mad and taking their outrage public.

Deceased saxophonist and founding band member LeRoi Moore was blatantly omitted during the Grammys’ annual video montage of musicians who have passed.

While it’s true, as Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy, said in a statement that nearly 250 members of the music community died in 2008 and all are listed in the program book from the award show, it’s exclusion worth grousing about.

Moore has won Grammys as part of DMB; he was a founding member of the group; and the band’s guru, Coran Capshaw, is a revered member of the music industry.

I can’t recall all of the names that flashed by during the segment (in the press room, it’s often difficult to see the monitors on which we watch the show), and obviously anyone who died was important to somebody. But surely a less prominent person could have been removed to squeeze in Moore.

Portnow’s statement also said that, “The Academy recognizes Moore’s contributions to music and music education, and we are deeply saddened by his premature passing.”

That hasn’t exactly mollified fans, who have established a Facebook page to express their anger and to urge Moore’s followers to bombard the Grammy office with emails (an address for a press contact is listed on the site). So far, almost 1,000 people have joined the site.

At this point, nothing can be done to rectify the situation. But kudos to DMB’s fans for not letting this go unnoticed.
