On a rainy Saturday night, I caught up with Elliott Yamin, hard at work at Pulse Recording studios. You’ll have to wait a few more weeks for my full story from catching up with E, but I figured I could share a few details, and a sneak peek at one of the pics taken of him that night (thanks to former T-D freelance photog Scott Kirkland, who now lives in L.A. and shoots all the big-shots at red carpet events). Elliott played his new single, “Fight For Love,” for me on his Mac, and I’ll tell you honestly that it’s the kind of slick, catchy, midtempo R&B tune that should sound great on radio. The chorus is strong, but it’s the bridge – with layered vocals and a swooping melody – that really make the song. “Fight” isn’t expected to hit radio until next month, but Elliott said it’s already leaked to some stations, so it might arrive sooner than planned. As for the new album, he’s still deciding on a title (“A Part of Me” is one possibility) and said he’s a little nervous about the “sophomore jinx,” but confident because he feels that he has a collection of really good songs (the album will likely contain 10-12 tracks). He also isn’t sure if the songs he recorded several months ago with Jermaine Dupri will make the album.
He’s also hitting the road early – next month is the plan – to get word out about the upcoming album. That’s all I can tell you for now, but keep an eye out for an Elliott story in the next few weeks.
I’ve heard a snippet of the song Fight For You, and can’t wait for the release of the single. Elliott’s vocals are (as usual) spot on. tinman
