“Lost” poll #1: What questions do you want answered?
Melissa Ruggieri
May 19, 2010 5:52 PM

Hey, “Lost” freaks! I know you’ve been spending as much time as I and my fellow “Lost”-ies have in dissecting every inane detail of the show (Can Richard really be dead? Who helped Desmond out of the well - you know, we haven’t seen Rose and Bernard in ages? When did Hurley become Island Enlightened?).

So, until the finale on Sunday, check back here for the question of the day and tell us what you think. (Also, check out this cool pic of some of the cast at the “Lost Live” event in L.A. last week.)

First up - even though the past two weeks have answered a lot—what lingering questions do you hope the show will answer on Sunday?

Me, I’m going with, why can the island heal people? And, where the heck is Vincent?

Your turn.

How was the island able to move through time?

Why was Walt so special?

Who is Jack’s ex-wife in the sideways world?  (I think it’s Juliet)

Why is Desmond so special?

How much does Mrs. Hawking really know?

Who were the people in the out-rigger chasing Juliet, Sawyer, Miles, while they were toggling through time in Season 5? Juliet clearly shot one of them.

Vincent is with Rose and Bernard on their retirement island.

Here is my question… Why did Hurley never lose any weight… and how come Sawyer, Jack etc. had like the never growing beards?

What’s with all the opening shots on someones eye?
What did Juliet mean when she said “it worked.”
Were the candidates scratched off the list because they redeemed themselves by a selfless act?
What the heck did the numbers mean?
Where’s Penny, Juliett etc in the parallel reality?

Surprise! Bret Michaels is a Celebrity Apprentice finalist
Melissa Ruggieri
May 16, 2010 11:48 PM

Well, how interesting.

Bret Michaels is in the finale of “The Celebrity Apprentice.”

Now that the awesome rocker – who really has demonstrated what a decent dude he is despite that “Rock of Love” ickiness – is on the mend and ready to visit Oprah on Wednesday, I can say this: Can you imagine if the guy had died?

Has there ever been a reality show where a finalist passed away before the live finale aired?

Thankfully, Michaels has made a miraculous recovery from the brain hemorrhage he suffered last month, an affliction that his doctors say kills more than 50 percent of people before they even get to the hospital.

You’ll recall that when Michaels was first hospitalized, Donald Trump, in his widely circulated get well wish, referred to the Poison frontman as a “champion.” It did make me wonder if Trump was being overly complimentary just in case Michaels didn’t pull through or if, as improbable as it seemed, that Michaels made it to the final two, where he will battle the nasty, manipulative Holly Wanna-Be-Omarosa
Robinson Peete.

I’m sure I speak on behalf of all Unskinny Bop-pers out there when I say, go get ‘em, Bret.

But the live finale – airing Sunday from 9-11 p.m. on NBC (and opposite the “Lost” finale – these people are killing me!!) – poses an interesting question. Regardless of how well Michaels did on his create-a-Snapple-flavor task (yawn), how can he not garner some sympathy from Trump, who chooses the winner live?

As much as I detest Peete, it does seem she’s at an unfair disadvantage. That also means that Trump could make another of his illogical decisions, like firing Cyndi Lauper for merely mentioning that Peete gave her the idea to paint a room red, and choose Peete just so he won’t appear to be swayed by Michaels’ recent health scares.

Huh. This might actually live up to the vitriolic hilarity between Joan Rivers and Annie Duke last season.

Update: Now that Michaels is back in the hospital because of a hole in his heart—can this guy not catch a break?!—his appearance Sunday is tentative. Can the show go on without one of its finalists, or will Trump resked?

Starz series “Gravity” does suicide as dramedy
Melissa Ruggieri
May 16, 2010 2:35 AM

Fans of “Breaking Bad” – and I know of more than a few – are already wise to the unlikely charms of Krysten Ritter.

The actress, who looks like a little sister version of Katy Perry, now has her own series to anchor, “Gravity” (Starz, 10:30 p.m. Friday), where she plays a sardonic, clinically depressed twentysomething unhappy with her aimless life as a makeup clerk.

The show, about a suicide survivors group, defines “quirky dramedy.” I hadn’t had a chance to check out “Gravity” until now (thanks, FiOS On Demand!) and as much as I want to like the show, it’s the type that goes out of its way to be weird.

It’s a tough sell, getting viewers to tune into 30 minutes about people so unhappy, they’ll drive their car off a parkway or swallow a bottle of codeine. But it’s far more affecting watching Ritter’s Lily and Ivan Sergei (her group buddy, Robert), the guy who tried to end it all by driving his car off the Palisades Interstate Parkway but got “lucky” when the vehicle landed in a swimming pool aboard a gay cruise ship in the Hudson (see what I mean?), struggle in their immediate friends- with-benefits relationship than trying to figure out why a mouse is sitting on a kitchen cheese plate.

Robert’s guilt about dating – two years after his wife died – mines the most emotion, and also offers a smirky confessional scene with Robert Carlyle as the priest. But don’t expect a ton of laughs – after all, a show about sad people trying to lessen their sadness is still going to be pensive by nature.

That said, a kind of creepy turn by series writer/director Eric Schaeffer as a cop and the presence of Rachel Hunter as a washed-up model occasionally pull “Gravity” out of its doldrums.

But it isn’t a good sign when, four episodes in, you really don’t care if anyone lives.

Rachel Dratch still can’t catch a break

We know that something usually gets sliced out of “Saturday Night Live” between dress rehearsal and live air, but did it have to be the return of Debbie Downer? Check out this skit featuring all of the girls (including the golden one!) that didn’t make it to air.

Betty White kills on SNL, but the material…eh
Melissa Ruggieri
May 09, 2010 2:03 AM

Betty White proved herself the timeless comic gem we expected on her much-hyped “Saturday Night Live” appearance.

My only criticism – aside from about 13 too many “MacGruber” sketches (as Seth, Tina and Amy would say, “Really?! An entire movie based on this tripe? Really?!”) – it seemed as if the writers relied a bit too much on the most tired of comedic gags: Have the old lady say something inappropriate or crude and let the knee-slapping commence!

Granted, the always-welcome NPR skit with Molly Shannon and Ana Gasteyer is already destined for the highlight reel thanks to those not-so-subtle muffin jokes and I’m pretty sure that “Wizard. Of. Ass.” will soon be printed on T-shirts worldwide.

But the digital short missed a prime opportunity to stage a collaboration between White and musical guest Jay-Z (who sweetly dedicated his “Young Forever,” a riff on Alphaville’s 1984 hit “Forever Young,” to the ageless TV legend), instead relying on silly vulgarity.

And c’mon, you have the brilliant Tina Fey, the chameleonic Amy Poehler, the towering Maya Rudolph and Gasteyer (you see where I’m going here?) and no “Golden Girls” skit? No “Mary Tyler Moore” tribute? No “Password” spoof? You’ve got Betty White on your stage and instead you stick her in a red wig to spout lines about Depends (though, admittedly, “CSI: Sarasota” was pretty inspired)?

Ah, well. So now we can hope that White’s upcoming TV Land show, “Hot in Cleveland,” utilizes her peerless timing a bit more fluidly. But thanks, “SNL,” for giving the people what they wanted. Now, if only Lorne Michaels could persuade Fey and her estrogen crew to return more frequently, because, really, the show is pretty horrible without them.

I agree with the reviewer.  The skit writers relied solely on vulgarity.  So many missed opportunities such as a Golden Girls spoof. I had almost expected that. I enjoyed betty’s appearance but the writers missed the mark.

TV watch: “Community” frustrating, but has “Parks and Recreation” potential
Melissa Ruggieri
May 07, 2010 11:24 PM

Of all of the new sitcoms this year, “Community” is the one that frustrates me the most. One week it’s sharp and memorable. The next, a snooze fest.

But if you missed Thursday’s show, an obvious sweeps plant with its grandiose paintball plot, go find it now On Demand or at NBC.com.

I adore Joel McHale, both as host of E!’s “The Soup” and as the snarky lawyer-turned-community-college hunk Jeff Winger (and speaking of hunks, that paintball ep reveals that the lanky-looking McHale spends a bit of time on the weight machines – who knew?). And the cast of “Breakfast Club”-esque supporting characters have, mostly, formed into individuals worth caring about, particularly Danny Pudi’s movie-obsessed Abed and neurotic Britta (am I the only one who thinks Gillian Jacobs looks like a blonde Anne Hathaway?).

But every time I start to upgrade the show to must-watch status, instead of on-in-the-background-while-I-play-video-poker-on-my-laptop status, some plodding episode like the prior week’s “The Art of Discourse,” where Jeff and Britta pointlessly battled a trio of dopes on campus, sends it right back to the secondary viewing list.

Then again, the show has shown – hate the cliché, but it’s true – tremendous growth, sandwiching in a ton of pop culture references (the “Glee” remark in the paintball episode was a hilarious smackdown) and making Chevy Chase seem somewhat relevant.

“Community” deserves the second season it’s been granted, and my hope is that it will find its surest footing next year, much like the tepid-turned-awesome “Parks and Recreation” this season.

As endearing as Amy Poehler’s Leslie Knope is, the real revelations have been April (the wonderfully deadpan Aubrey Plaza) and Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman), a character who, like “30 Rock”’s Liz Lemon, must always be referred to by a full name…just because.

While it’s a little disconcerting to see Rob Lowe already on the show as of this Thursday, days before his character is disposed of on “Brothers & Sisters,” his relentlessly chipper government guy sent in to slash the Pawnee budget is a hoot, especially when he starts yammering about his vitamin regimen.

Lowe has finally earned some credibility in the dramatic world, but most people probably aren’t aware of his comedic chops. Kind of like Matthew Fox, a deeply nuanced actor on “Lost” all these years whom many will still consider merely as that dude from “Party of Five.”

Maybe if his “Parks and Rec” gig doesn’t pan out, Lowe can bop over to the “Community” set and straighten out that crew.

Phish 3-D film sticks around another week
Melissa Ruggieri
May 06, 2010 6:25 PM

The limited edition run of “Phish 3D,” expected to end tomorrow, will now stick around another week at Movieland.

The concert movie was filmed in October 2009 at the band’s infamous Festival 8, attended by more than 40,000 fans.

For tickets, check out http://www.phish3dmovie.com.

And, if you’d rather see your Phish in person, the band is performing June 15 at nTelos Pavilion in Portsmouth. Tickets are sold out, but surely there is a Phish fan out there who had a change of plans and can’t make the show.

Man v. Food Richmond stop featured on tonight’s “Nightline”
Melissa Ruggieri
May 03, 2010 5:55 PM

Adam Richman fans will have to wait until July 4 to watch his full experience while in Richmond a couple of weeks ago, when he endured challenges at Caliente, The Black Sheep and Buz & Ned’s.

But tune in to ABC’s “Nightline” tonight at 11:35 for a feature on Richman that includes footage of his Richmond escapades. ABC’s John Berman even tackled the “stupid wings” at Caliente (check out a peek here).

Richman’s “Man v. Food” airs on the Travel Channel.

and to think people used to read books.

“Lost” creators will discuss the show on the big screen
Melissa Ruggieri
April 30, 2010 4:30 PM

It’s impossible, if you watch “Lost,” that you aren’t left scratching your head at the end of episode.

So maybe it will be cool when the series’ creators, Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof participate in a live Q&A May 20 that will be beamed into 454 movie theaters nationwide (including Virginia Center 20). Or, maybe it will be, as my friend Mike said, a reason to pay $12.50 to hear the guys say, “Uh, sorry, we can’t tell you about that.”

The event, which will be moderated by New York Times entertainment editor Lorne Manly, will include a teaser from the series finale, which airs May 23 on ABC, and supposedly offer insight from Lindelof and Cuse about the challenges they faces trying to craft a finale that would satisfy fans, but also make storytelling sense.

If you’ve got a question you’d like them to tackle – duh, who wouldn’t? – you can submit it for consideration at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Tickets for the live movie theater event are on sale now at the Virginia Center box office and http://www.fathomevents.com.

In case you missed the video of Elliott Yamin and Kara DioGuardi in Angola, which aired on “American Idol” last night, you can check out a version of it here.

The clip aired to promote “Idol Gives Back,” the charity show which will take place April 21.

Always nice to see Elliott looking good and doing good.
