A day at the James

I have long thought that there might be a good story in spending a day at James River Park. From my personal visits, particularly to Pony Pasture Rapids, I have noticed how in spring the day starts off peacefully, with just a few anglers and dog walkers joining the singing birds. As the day goes on and gets warmer, people begin to pour in, and the river becomes basically one big place to party.
I wonder if people who don’t frequent the river realize how alive the park is this time of year.
Photographer Kevin Morley and I spent the day on the river, from about 7 a.m. to about 7 p.m., on Saturday, May 30. The day was probably a little unusual because the river was so high—6.5 feet, as measured by the Westham gauge, near the Huguenot Bridge. We saw canoeists who got in trouble in the high water. We found a couple of young women who had gotten swept down river but survived. Later, we learned that a 36-year-old man drowned at a rope swing at the Huguenot Flatwater section of the park.
So the story had a little more edge to it than I envisioned originally. Maybe you could say this was a typical day when the river is busy and high.
