Petersburg

A man was shot and killed outside his Petersburg home yesterday, and police later had to control a crowd that stormed past crime-scene tape and swarmed the street.

Police said yesterday evening that authorities had arrested one person, whose identity was not released, and that there are three other suspects in the death of Wallace Wesson Jr.

Wesson, 21, was shot at least once and died in the yard on the side of his yellow house in the 1000 block of Sixth Street, police said.

Officers were summoned to the scene about 11:45 a.m.

Authorities were looking for a white Dodge Charger with rental tags; they believed the vehicle had been occupied by six males. They declined to discuss further details of the shooting.

Yesterday afternoon, dozens of young people stood in a light rain and watched investigators work at the crime scene.

Ebony Dillard, a friend of Wesson’s, stood with an umbrella beside Wesson’s cousin, Diesha Finney.

“Anything you ask him [for] - if he had it, he gave it to you. Anything. Anything,” Dillard said, breaking into tears. “I can’t believe this.”

“Everybody out here knew him,” Finney said. “Who didn’t know Wallace?”

Finney locked arms with Dillard, and they started to walk away.

A few minutes later, at about the time authorities were removing Wesson’s body from the crime scene, a woman started screaming and stomping down the street.

The outburst spurred dozens of people to duck under the yellow tape and swarm Sixth Street near its intersection with Accomack Street. One man pulled off his gray sweatshirt as if preparing to fight.

There were several outbursts while more than 50 people crowded the street, but no one was assaulted or had to be detained, authorities said.

“All of you out of the street,” an officer ordered a group of about 30 people at one point. Almost no one moved away.

Someone yelled, “They’ll start shooting. They’ll start shooting.”

Soon after that, a woman yelled to another group of people who were standing farther along the street, as officers stood between the two groups.

“No need for you all to come back down here,” the woman said, prompting members of the other group to shout back.

2 more suspects arrested in Petersburg killing

Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Petersburg police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with the shooting death of 21-year-old Wallace Wesson Jr. on Sunday.

The first suspect to be arrested was Anthony Lorenzo “Amp” Green, 19, who was charged with first-degree murder and felony use of a firearm, police said. Yesterday, police announced the arrest of Kevin Correll Green, 23, Anthony Green’s cousin, on similar charges.

Police spokeswoman Esther Hyatt identified the third suspect arrested as Shawntelle Jones, 29. The charges against her were not immediately released.

Wesson was shot at least once in the torso and died outside his home near Sixth and Accomack streets. Police were called to the scene Sunday about 11:45 a.m. The shooting aroused emotions in the neighborhood, when dozens of people charged through police lines and swarmed the street near the crime scene.
