Weekend shootings leave two Richmond-area men dead
Police found the body of Sherod Devar Couser, 27, in the 200 block of East 11th Street shortly after 3 a.m. “This is the only child I’ve got,“ said Couser, standing with other grieving relatives outside the home she shared with her son on Mechanicsville Turnpike in Richmond’s East End. “Sad that people kill people—children—for no reason.“ “There’s nothing anybody can do unless you’re going to tell me you can bring him through that door right now,“ Couser added, tapping the glass on her front door, stomping her foot and collapsing against the front of her house in tears. The last time Couser saw her son was Saturday about 7 p.m. when he left home to visit some friends, she said. His cousin, Natisha Gaines, said she saw him about 1 a.m. inside a nightclub on Jefferson Davis Highway where he had gone with a friend. “When I was ready to leave,“ Gaines said, “he just asked me, ‘Was I all right,‘ and I said, ‘Was he all right?‘ And I didn’t see him no more.“ Gaines said she didn’t know with whom Couser left the club or where he went from there. Investigators were following leads yesterday but had not established a motive for the killing or made an arrest. Sherod Couser had a 6-year-old son and worked temporary construction jobs, his mother said. He was arrested Sept. 13 and had been charged with possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, according to court records. In 2004, he pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and to possession of cocaine with a firearm. He was sentenced to a total of four months on the two charges. “Every time I look at the news, somebody’s child is dead,“ Couser said, “and this time it happens to be mine.“ “I hope they suffer,“ she said, referring to whoever killed her son. “Part of me is dead.“ Anyone with information on the killing is asked to call Richmond Police Tips Line at (804) 514-8477 or Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000. |
