Chesterfield man charged with murder A Chesterfield County man is accused of fatally stabbing his stepfather after an argument yesterday in their home. Haywood S. Smith, 22, is charged with murder in the death of James E. Henley Sr., 42, said Chesterfield police Lt. Jerry Netherland. Henley’s 10-year-old daughter witnessed the killing in the 3700 block of Yard Arm Drive off Harrowgate Road just south of Carver Middle School in southern Chesterfield, said Henley’s brother, F. Wayne Henley. The girl ran to a neighbor’s house. A pizza deliverer arrived about the same time because James Henley had ordered a pizza, his brother said. Police were summoned to the house about 11:35 a.m. and found Henley dead on the floor with a chest wound, Netherland said. Henley lived at the house with his daughter, wife and Smith, who was Henley’s stepson, according to Wayne Henley. Henley had been married to Smith’s mother for about 11 years, Wayne Henley said. James Henley was a maintenance employee at an apartment complex in Chester, his brother said. He also sang in his church choir at Union Baptist Church in Richmond. “He was a hard-working man who was loving and loved to sing in the church,” his brother said. Wayne Henley added that his niece was holding up well considering that she saw her father killed. “She just wants to write her daddy a letter,” Wayne Henley said. Smith was being held in the Chesterfield Jail, pending a bond hearing tomorrow. |
