Woman found dead in South Side
Sunday, Oct 12, 2008
Richmond police are investigating the slaying early yesterday of a young Glen Allen woman.

Erica R. Williams, 21, of the 8300 block of Dove Hollow Place was pronounced dead on a walkway behind an apartment building in the 3300 block of Moody Avenue about 12:40 a.m., police said.

Officers were responding to a report of a shooting, and police said in a news release that Williams may have been killed during a robbery. The crime scene is in South Side a few blocks east of George Wythe High School.

No one answered the door yesterday afternoon at the house listed as Williams’ address, in a neighborhood of single-family homes off Hungary Road just west of Staples Mill Road.

Friends of a Henrico County woman killed Saturday in South Richmond described her as cheerful, funny and down to earth.
Erica R. Williams, 21, was found shot dead on a walkway behind an apartment building in the 3300 block of Moody Avenue about 12:40 a.m. Saturday.

Richmond police said yesterday that detectives continued to investigate the slaying and were following some leads in the case, but they did not say whether there was a suspect. Police said Saturday that the death may have been a result of a robbery.

“She had a lot of friends,” said Tia Trowell, who identified herself as a close friend of Williams. “She was always willing to help others. She was humble.”

Yesterday morning, Trowell, 24, left her favorite red hat on the grass next to where Williams’ body was found. Flowers, candles and little glass angels were also at the spot in Williams’ honor.

Trowell said she had heard that Williams, who lived in the 8300 block of Dove Hollow Place, was in that area to meet someone. But she said she didn’t know who and that she did not think Williams frequented the area.

Several neighbors said yesterday that they had never seen Williams.

Montiquea Robinson, who lives nearby, said she and a friend found Williams’ body on the ground about 12:35 a.m. and called police.

“It hurts to see this,” said Robinson, a mother of two. “I am a nurse, I have seen deaths, but seeing someone so young being killed. It is the worse feeling.

“I am scared to walk out my door. I have to walk and see that spot,” she said. “It is going to take me a long time to forget.”

Trowell said Williams was a graduate of Hermitage High School and was taking classes at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

“She has been through a lot in life,” Trowell said. “She was getting herself together.

“It hurts. It is senseless. I don’t understand who would take an innocent life.”
