We All Hate Him Just a Teensy Bit for That

Garrison Keillor sure can write.

Don’t miss his column on tomorrow’s Op/Ed Page. Here’s a taste:

“Most famous people are people most people have never heard of.“ That’s an aphorism worthy of inclusion in Bartlett’s.

Security officers seem to average roughly $12 per hour, but the range is about $10-$17 per hour. Some armed guards are on the higher end, some unarmed guards on the lower end. But even then it can still be variable. It also depends on the hotel/casino, some will pay more than others.

Keillor is a fantastic storyteller, a latter-day minstrel. He fits the definition only, not the image.

The definition from Answers.com is apt:

“A medieval entertainer who traveled from place to place, especially to sing and recite poetry.“

I was struck by the Robert Samuelson column next to the Garrison Keillor piece as well.

Samuelson states the news media may bear some of the blame for politicians telling us sweet lies.  They give the silliness cover by pretending what the politicians say is a serious and adequate discussion of what would otherwise be difficult and unpopular topics.  Bitter truth.

I guess Samuelson at least initiates the process by reminding us the real problems are less tractable than the warm n’fuzzy pap and inane arguments that politicians routinely employ. We need to get in the habit of thinking that solutions do exist to our problems but are not easy, guaranteed, or always palatable.

How can they speak the truth if we are not prepared to listen to it ?
