Let’s Hear it for Multiculturalism!

A 13-year-old girl is stoned to death in front of a crowd:
Dozens of men stoned Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow to death Monday in a stadium packed with 1,000 spectators in the southern port city of Kismaayo, Amnesty International and Somali news media reported, citing witnesses. The Islamist militia in charge of Kismaayo had accused her of adultery after she reported that three men had raped her, the rights group said.
Some values—and by “some” I mean “those of the Enlightenment”—are worth defending and, dismayingly, still need it.

This is incomprehensible. Even in the animal world the instinct to protect the young is paramount.
This was a 13 year old CHILD. Who according to the culture would have been protected and virgin. Not only was she raped by grown men (of which there is no more mention) but then she was punished by being stoned to death. In public.
I do not care what cultural or religious mores were in place here. This goes against human nature itself.
Where is the outrage?

Apparently very few muslims are repulsed by the atrocities by people of their faith. There is very little outcry against the acts. These people need to upgrade to the 21st Century.

Delores Stroke (above post) is on the right track, I think.
We should keep in mind that milions of muslims are repulsed by such atrocities commited by their co-religionists.
Case in point: The level of violence in Iraq is much lower because most Sunnis - the “base” of the insurgency - turned against the radical Islamist group “Al Queda in Iraq” (their fighters going on the American payroll) and because of that group’s harsh “Islamist” social and legal agenda (which includes things like stoning for sexual offences.)
And such “anti-Islamist” sentiments are shared by millions of Iranians (especially the young)- the next generation of a country that President Bush put in an “Axis of Evil” and that Senator John McCain jokes about bombing.

Hey Delores, why do “these people” need to be exposed to other cultures? Why should we or anyone else tolerate their murderous ways?

Bob, multiculturalism is just another term for hating whitey. No one really cares about who eats what, dances in what clothes or celebrates real of made-up holidays. Most of us just want real people who contribute to America and not the whiners who hate us.

Again we see the evil islam in action! The true believers reveal their lifestyle of supression, hate and murder. Instead of invading a muslim country next time they attack, there will be a next time, just unload the old B52s and get rid of the bombs. Even use the missiles from the Cold War. Evil is evil regardless of what religion it hides behind.

I am not sure why you attach term “multiculturalism” to this horrific story. I want to say shame on you for trying to ruin a positive concept.
I see nothing multicultural about this. This has more to do with the abusive use of religion, misogynistic attitudes, and base human cruelty made possible by the lack of something essential.
Somalia is a catastrophe. I want to vomit when I think of what that poor girl and her family went through.
There is a place that would truly benefit from some kind of international intervention. As would the DRC, Zimbabwe, and a few others.
Pirates and stonings. Way to go, Somalia.

How terrible!
But I’m not sure about your headline. These people NEED to be exposed to different cultures.
If you want a smart-alecky headline that makes sense, “Let’s Hear it for Social Conservatism” or “Let’s Hear it for Religous Fundamentalism” work better.
