GOP Rout
Todd Culbertson
Nov 19, 2008

A correspondent makes the case that Virginia was the GOP’s worst state on Nov. 4. Republicans lost three House seats in the Old Dominion, plus a Senate seat. And Democrats carried the Commonwealth at the presidential level for the first time since 1964. This space will not now throw out any explanations, or offer any answers, but would like to ask, what happened, and what must the GOP do?

Virginia Republicans suffered a horrible year.

As a liberal I find that the advice conservatives give to Democrats is usually self-serving and wrongheaded. Often hilariously so. So instead of my own advice for the Republicans, I’ll quote that of a conservative, Kathleen Parker:

“...the evangelical, right-wing, oogedy-boogedy branch of the GOP is what ails the erstwhile conservative party and will continue to afflict and marginalize its constituents…“

“And shifting demographics suggest that the Republican Party—and conservatism with it—eventually will die out unless religion is returned to the privacy of one’s heart where it belongs.“

In other words, she recommends abandoning the culture wars. However, I’m afraid that in the short term, the Republican Party will go in the opposite direction.
