. . . Virginia’s Schools for Students with Disabilities Fund, which isn’t quite the same thing, but is certainly a start. (We made inquiries yesterday, but didn’t hear back by presstime.)

Today’s lead editorial suggests that

The commonwealth also might want to consider emulating Florida’s McKay Scholarships for Students With Disabilities program, which gives parents unhappy with the public school system’s services for their special-needs children a chance to transfer their children to private schools. The more options parents have, the happier they are likely to be.

Take note Richmond:  The Bd. of Visitor’s at Radford University gave a 20% raise to their Provost, a Mr. Stanton, after only 14 months in office raising his salary to 299k annually.  They’re now negotiationg a 5 yr extension and a 155k annual annuity increase for President Kyle, who has held the position 3 years.  Ms. Kyle currently earns a 290k salary, 13k in bonuses, a 55k annuity, and a free house and car at her disposal.  At the September board meeting Ms. Kyle read a letter from Governor Kaine which had projected budget cuts of 5 to 15 percent. The Radford Association of Retired Employees (RARE) voted against this raise and submitted a letter to the board in July to no avail.  I wrote Governor Kaine, and received a response from a Mr. Morris from the Council of Virginia Higher Education which did not address the increase.  It is known that the UVA President (Casteen) receives 1 million dollars a year.  Why I ask, are we paying the rank and file hierarchy of a state supported school these undeserving salaries that exceed even the President of the U.S. (400k), the V.Pres (215K), the Postmaster General (258), and Virginia’s Attorney General (160K).  These are the CEO’s of higher education syphoning money from “unrestricted donated funds” via the Board of Visitors.
