October 16, 2009 11:57 AM

Times are tough and consumers might be holding onto their money tightly.
But on CarMax’s Web site, people are taking a closer look at sports cars. The Goochland County-based automotive retailer said online searches of sports cars were up 6 percent in September compared with same month a year ago.
“Consumers may now be feeling more comfortable with the idea of getting a ‘fun’ vehicle that has an enduring appeal,” said Craig Beiner, a CarMax purchasing manager in Virginia Beach.
The most-searched sports car on the site was the Ford Mustang, followed by the Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan 350Z, Chevrolet Camaro and the BMW M3.

September 11, 2009 11:30 AM

Construction has begun on the new American Family Fitness gym at the corner of Midlothian Turnpike and Woolridge Road in Chesterfield County.

The 68,000-square foot center is expected to open next summer.

The gym will include training areas and classrooms, as well as an aquatic center with three separate pools and 8,000-square feet of retail space.

American Family Fitness operates six gyms in the Richmond area and one in Fredericksburg. The new center is about two miles from a new 45,000-square foot Gold’s Gym, which opened earlier this year in Westchester Commons.

American Family Fitness is now in a temporary location at the Stein Mart Festival Shopping Center on Midlothian Turnpike. It moved there late last year from the Shops at the Arboretum, where Gold’s Gym opened in January.
